The 2012 AzATSA Conference is coming up fast - this Friday, May 4, 2012!

The conference will be a multi-speaker conference. The morning will feature Kurt Bumby, who will talk about a comprehensive approach to sex offender management. The afternoon will feature Robin Wilson, who will talk about sex offender treatment. This will be followed by a panel discussion lead by Dave Harvey.

His presentation will be "Internet Safety - protecting children from on-line predators." Predators lurk the Internet looking for unsuspecting victims. This programs teaches the dangers that exist and how to protect against them.

We will hold elections at this meeting.

April 5 is the last day for early registration.

The 2011 AzATSA conference will be held on May 6, 2011 and will feature Franca Cortoni. The topic is "Treating and Assessing Sexual Offenders: Methods and Outcomes." More information and registration forms can be found at http://azatsa.org/conference.html.

"The last decade has seen a renewal of discussions and debates on how best to treat sexual offenders. Risk-Need-Responsivity (Andrews & Bonta, 2006), Relapse Prevention (Pithers, 1990), Self-Regulation (Ward & Hudson, 2000), and Good Lives (Ward & Stewart, 2003) are all models being advocated for the treatment of sexual offenders, leaving clinicians with a bewildering array of approaches from which to choose. Further, in addition to these models, concepts such as positive psychology, strength-based treatment, and humanistic approaches are now increasingly mentioned in relation to the treatment of sexual offenders, adding to the confusion about what should be best practices in the treatment of sexual offenders. To help reduce this confusion, and because a return to basics (i.e., what is the empirical evidence?) is being advocated, a conceptual framework for the treatment of sexual offenders will be presented. This framework incorporates the latest theoretical thinking and empirical findings on sexual offenders and provides a rationale for a simplified, yet systematic, approach to their treatment."

“Ethics & Polygraph Testing: Normative Data, Generalizability & Special Populations” by Marty Oelrich, M.A. (candidate).

This presentation will discuss the ethical complexities involved in generalizing normative data from psychophysiological detection of deception (PDD; polygraph) research to special populations, including juveniles, persons with developmental disabilities, individuals taking multiple prescription medications due to chronic mental health problems or physical health disorders, and other individuals for whom presently available normative data may or may not be representative. A review of relevant theory and research will be presented and discussed. This presentation will also include a review and discussion of applicable professional standards, ethical codes and ethical considerations as they pertain to the use of PDD test data and results in the assessment, treatment and management of sexual abusers.

"Behavioral Treatment for Sex Offenders" DVD by William Marshall, Ph.D.

Training for this meeting will consist of a DVD presentation. In 57 minutes of straightforward, conversation-style information-sharing, international consultant and trainer Bill Marshall explains the essential elements of four behavioral treatment techniques: covert sensitization, masturbatory reconditioning, ammonia aversion, and olfactory aversion. Marshall describes clearly and simply how each technique is implemented, outlines any practical drawbacks, and offers an assessment of the technique's value.
